Traditional Chinese Diancui
Jewelry Craft Experience
Diancui (Kingfisher-feather Inlay) is an exclusive traditional Chinese craft dating back to the Han Dynasty(2000 years ago). The aesthetic of diancui aligns with China’s traditional reverence for the color cyan (qing). In the Five Elements philosophy, cyan represents the east and was regarded as a noble color in ancient times. For this reason, diancui became a symbol of royal status, exemplifying the perfect fusion of Eastern traditional aesthetics and craftsmanship.
Ming empresses’ phoenix crowns adopted this craft on a massive scale: precious iridescent kingfisher feathers were meticulously glued onto gilt metal frameworks to form phoenixes, cloud patterns and floral ornaments, paired with filigree gold, pearls and gemstones. Modern crafts often use peacock feathers as eco-friendly substitutes instead of protected kingfisher plumage.
